Fixed Term and Permanent Exclusions: The role of the Governing Board/Board of Trustees

Outline

All governors, including those new to governance, Board of Trustees Members, Management Committee members and associate members.

No cost to schools who purchase the 2018-19 'Governor and School Compliance Training' package.

Description

This course will raise awareness of the DfE Framework for Governors and Board Members to facilitate individuals working with their Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on exclusion; both fixed term and permanent. The course will also recalibrate/develop an understanding of Ofsted literature (both current and proposed) related to exclusions alongside reviewing good practice in schools and academies.

Outcomes

  • To recalibrate/develop understanding of the legislative framework regarding exclusions together with the differences between fixed term and permanent exclusions.
  • To recalibrate/develop understanding of the governing board’s statutory duties in reviewing the reinstatement of an excluded student.
  • To develop an understanding of how to monitor and review exclusion data with SLT.
  • To recalibrate/develop understanding of the role of the Independent Review Panel.
  • To recalibrate/develop understanding of the current Ofsted Section 5 Inspection Framework regarding Exclusions alongside the Draft 2019 Consultation.
  • Identification of local data and trends relating to exclusion offset against national data.
