External moderation of teacher assessment based on the STA 2017 Assessment and Reporting Arrangements (ARA)

External moderation is statutory provision which gives confidence that schools’ teacher assessment (TA) judgements for KS1 and KS2 English writing are accurate and consistent with national standards, as specified in the interim TA framework and the exemplification material. Brent LA has a statutory duty to moderate a sample of at least 25% of schools to validate KS1 TA and KS2 English writing TA judgements.
Academies and independent settings that have chosen to receive a moderation visit as part of the 2017 programme will be charged based on the number of forms of entry. Maintained schools that wish to access the service as part of their monitoring pupil achievement process will also be charged according to number of forms of entry. Maintained schools selected by the LA to receive a moderation visit as part of its 2017 programme will not be charged.
A moderation visit takes half a day per key stage and is undertaken by a lead moderator and experienced school-based practitioner – the number of which will depend on the form of entry.
